Loek for schools
More and more schools are going smartphone-free all day. Loek is the calm e-ink screen that shows the schedule, homework and tests from Somtoday at home - so your students miss nothing, without a phone. Loek lives at home, not at school.
The gap that smartphone-free policy leaves behind
You take the phone out of the classroom - rightly so. But the schedule, homework and tests live in Somtoday, accessible only via an app or website. So the phone sneaks back in through the side door.
The schedule exception
"Just checking my schedule" quickly becomes the reason phones come out anyway. One exception undermines the whole policy.
Phone-free at school, phone-light at home
School is only part of the day. At home, parents fight a daily battle to limit the smartphone - but as long as the schedule and homework live only in an app, that phone has to come out at home too.
For every student
Not every family wants or can give a smartphone. Loek gives every student access to school info, even without a phone.
How Loek helps parents and schools toward smartphone-free parenting and policy
Loek is a small e-ink screen that sits in the student's room at home and shows school information only. No apps, no notifications, no social media.
- Makes a fully smartphone-free school policy ("at home or in the locker") realistic - the last reason to grab the phone at school disappears.
- Makes smartphone-free parenting easier at home: the schedule and homework are on Loek, so the phone doesn't have to come out 'just to check'.
- Makes it easier to delay the first smartphone: with a basic phone, a starter phone, or no phone yet, your child misses nothing for school - Loek shows the schedule, homework and tests.
- Works independently over wifi. No app on a phone, no distracting screen.
- Parents can see along: the screen sits visibly at home, so parents see the schedule and tests without logging in themselves.
- Syncs automatically with Somtoday. If the schedule changes, Loek changes with it.
- No extra work for teachers or mentors. Loek reads the same data already in Somtoday.
Made for use at home
Somtoday and Magister need checking regularly - for schedule changes, homework and the material for upcoming tests. Today that means reaching for a phone (with its distractions) or a laptop (with its distractions). Loek shows that same information at home on a calm e-ink screen, so students need to pick up a phone or laptop far less often for it. We're honest about it: phones and laptops are still needed - Loek mainly removes the daily "just checking" reflex.
What students see at home on Loek
- The current schedule, including any changes.
- Homework for the days ahead.
- Which tests are coming up and the material they cover.
What a phone or laptop is still needed for
- Loek deliberately doesn't show grades or messages - you check those in Somtoday.
- Many schools deliver lesson material and exercises via laptop; that schoolwork isn't done on Loek.
Easy to switch on in Somtoday
You don't have to build anything or export any data. The connection runs through Somtoday Connect, the official integration API. You authorize Loek once - we handle the technical side.
1. Introduction
We briefly discuss how Loek fits your school and which students will use it.
2. Authorize Loek in Somtoday
Your administrator grants Loek one-time permission as a connection partner in your Somtoday environment. No client IDs or passwords for you to provide.
3. Students bind their device
Students scan a QR code and they're set. From then on, Loek automatically pulls their schedule, homework and tests.

Secure and privacy-friendly - by design
We process as little as possible
Loek only processes what's needed to show the screen:
Yes: first name (for the 'Hi …' screen), schedule, homework and tests.
No: grades, surname, contact details, citizen service number (BSN), attendance or care data.
- School data is only visible on the student's own device - nowhere else.
- Data is fetched, turned into a screen image and then deleted from memory immediately. Cached for 5 minutes at most.
- No selling or sharing of school data with third parties. No ads, no tracking of students.
Technical security
- Access tokens are stored encrypted (AES-256-GCM).
- All traffic runs over HTTPS.
- Hosted in Europe (the Netherlands), on Google Cloud.
- Every device authenticates with a hashed token that rotates automatically.
- Firmware updates are cryptographically signed (Ed25519) against tampering.
Your school remains the data controller. Loek acts as a processor, based on the General Processing Agreement for Education (version 4.0) from the Dutch education councils.
Support the smartphone-free movement
Loek makes smartphone-free education and smartphone-free parenting at home easier - and supports the smartphone-free movement. You can help by allowing Loek under your phone policy and telling new students and parents about it. Up for an introduction or a trial with a few students? We're happy to think along.
